Are pixels count really a determining factor in buying a digital camera?

Camera manufacturers are churning out those ultra megapixels faster than i can print money. I was looking at 7 or 8MP cameras, and now comes those 10Mp ones, flooding the market like nobody’s business. But, does it really make a difference? Do we really need those few extra megapixels?
The argument is always they can pack in more details. What for, not like i’m going to zoom in and snap pics of people’s armpit hairs liddat. Only reason i’ll buy it for those few extra Mps would be for cropping purposes. At least i can still crop them and yet retain image quality. A few extra Mps will translate to a few extra hundred that i have to dish out from my pocket. They had better be worth it should i get one later.
